Public transportation in Moscow

Bus and trolley-bus services

Bus and trolley-bus stops are easy to identify: look for a post with special colouring with or without a shelter; line numbers and destinations are always indicated. Yellow signs are for bus stops, white signs are for trolley-bus stops; if the sign is yellow and white, it is a bus and a trolley-bus stop.

Turnstile in a bus Buses and trolley-buses normally have a turnstile (see a picture). Board a bus / trolley-bus through the first door, buy your ticket from a driver, insert it into the turnstile’s slit (arrow first, facing you), then take it from the slit. When the green light flashes, go through. Tickets are also available in the booths located near bus and trolley-bus stops.

Fare: 15 roubles.

The upcoming stops are usually announced loudly and there is always an itinerary scheme.

Mini-buses, or fixed-route cabs (marshrutka; see a picture below) run along a fixed route for a fixed fare and allows passengers to get on or off wherever they want.

Normally, they run the same route as a corresponding bus/trolley-bus. The mini-bus does not come to a halt unless it is signalled to do so. Passengers may signal by verbally alerting the driver. If you are not sure where your stop is, ask the driver. A person waiting at the stop is required to flag down the mini-bus.

Fare: 15-20 roubles, to be paid to the driver.

Metro

Metro stations are clearly marked by the red letter M near the entrance:

The ticket desks are normally located near the entrance. Here you can buy a Metro card for different amount of trips:
trip — 15 roubles
trips — 30 roubles
trips — 70 roubles
10  trips — 125 roubles
20  trips — 230 roubles

To access trains, insert the Metro card into the lower slit of the turnstile (arrow first), take it from the upper slit and go through. In the Metro, there are no time and distance limits on a trip.

Be careful! Follow signs to choose a right direction. When exiting the Metro, pass through a turnstile without inserting the Metro card.

Exits are marked by Âûõîä â ãîðîä (“Exit to the city”) signs. If you need to change to a different line, follow signs Ïåðåõîä íà ñòàíöèþ... (“Change to the station...”) or Ïåðåõîä íà ... ëèíèþ (“Change to the ... line”).
